Yes, Cap, yes I did. And I have some thoughts.
My initial reaction while watching the finale was, "Hey, this is pretty awesome." The fight between Agatha and Wanda was awesome and it was cool to see that Disney+ spared no expense in bringing fans a great climax action scene, the kind we've come to expect from the MCU. That being said, I wish it had been longer! Agatha is, for my money, one of the best villains that has been introduced so far & because of the build-up between her and Wanda (which also could have been fleshed out more, IMO, though still had more depth than other hero-villain relationships) that battle held more heft than even some that have appeared in the movies.
The other battle - between Westview Vision and White Vision - was also great in that it wasn't a know-down-drag-out fight. OF COURSE it would come down to wits & not fisticuffs. I'm glad the writers made that decision, & hats off to the folks behind most of Vision's dialogue the last couple episodes. I mean, that "love persevering" line? Already iconic.
So, yes, I did like the finale and I really liked the show overall.
HOW. EV. ER.
I got me some questions. I know some of these questions will be answered in future films (and maybe shows, too?), but I have mixed feelings about that. One of the things I really enjoyed about WandaVision was how it was released. It wasn't dropped into our laps like an egregiously wrapped gift to be torn apart and devoured; it was released, much like Wanda's beloved sitcoms, weekly. It felt like a 'real' TV show, the old school network classics that made you inhale your dinner or skip out on plans with friends so you could park your butt on the couch and get lost for forty minutes (with built in bathroom breaks thanks to commercials for products you didn't care about).
With WandaVision we finally got to see these titular characters shine. We got the emotional depth that we haven't gotten in the films. We got to see the kind of character development that makes TV superior to movies. My hope is that that continues in future films; my fear is that it won't and that Marvel will begin to use the Disney+ shows as filler or a crutch for the more explosion-y razzle-dazzle focused films.
So, that's where my disappointment lies. I wasn't expecting to get all the answers, and I do look forward to seeing some of those mysteries solved in future films, but some things should have been answered within the universe (see what I did there?) of the show.
Anyway, here are the questions that remain:
1. Agatha - please, please, please let us see her again. Kathryn Hahn did such an awesome job bringing this character to life. Plus, the character's comic arc has been, up 'til now, pretty different from what the MCU has portrayed. There's a lot of room to have fun & I think it would be a HUGE mistake to not explore the character further.
How did she end up in Westview? Was she already there?
2. Wanda - I had theorized that there was more to Wanda than met the eye, even before gaining her powers (supposedly) from the mind stone. Will this be explored more? Is this how they'll introduce mutants?
It looks like she's back in Sokovia. Will she remain isolated? Will she seek counsel from the Sorcerer Supreme? Or will she be pulled reluctantly back into the action?
3. Billy & Tommy - so, how DID she get pregnant with them? In the comics the original explanation (part of Mephisto's soul, blah blah) doesn't seem like it could apply here. Monica said that they were *definitely* Wanda's - what does that mean? Like, genetically? Will we ever see them again? (I would be surprised if didn't)
4. Vision - so White Vision, aka the real Vision minus the mind stone, is still out there. Remember, we don't know how Thanos ended up with the mind stone, so it's unclear where Cap put it when he went back in time to return all the stones after Tony's snap. If the star-crossed lovers are destined to say 'hello' once again, could this be the key to that reunion? And would it mean a more permanent one? (Fingers crossed!)
5. Darcy - where'd she go? Sure, debriefings probably ARE lamesauce, but that seems like a likewise lame excuse for where she went.
6. Jimmy Woo - once again we have Ant-Man to thank for inspiring Woo's mad skillz. SWORD is gonna need a new head honcho...why not Woo?
7. Hayward - they spent the season building this dude up, his master plans, all his sliminess, and then...boom, he's arrested? Anticlimactic for sure. Granted Agatha ended up being the Big Bad, but it still felt like an undeveloped end to his storyline.
8. Skrulls - HOW MANY CHARACTERS ARE REALLY SKRULLS? Is this gonna be the MCU's version of It-Was-All-Just-A-Dream? I'm afraid the trope is gonna end up overused.
Well, WandaVision, you were awesome while you lasted. I'm sad that it's over.
